16. David and Ryan Toone – Ultra Marathon Runners – Part 2

In a selfish way, I knew that the Toone interview was going to be a long one. It would have to be broken up into parts because of the magic of “The Wasatch” and the fantastic example of balance in this family’s life.  It was that important to me that I take as much time as possible to interview this father and son duo.  It is remarkable how the principles we teach present themselves in lives full of forging success through balance.  This story depicts a principle we teach call Near Rocks, Far Rocks.  This is where you have a vision, in this case it would be to complete the Wasatch 100 or to complete 10 Wasatch 100 races.  That would be the Far Rock Vision. The Near Rocks are the planning along the way. Knowing the trail, knowing what food will settle in your stomach ie. Ensure and tomato juice, and not spicy Cheez-its, visualizing the course and specific aid stations.  The Far Rock Vision is where you are headed. The Near Rocks are how you will get there or what will prevent you from getting there. As subtopics, Near Rocks, Far Rocks is also made up of Vision, Priorities, and Goals. Priorities involved the things you must say NO to even more than what you say YES to.  Goals, are SMART and inspiring. Lastly, once you get to your vision, you must reflect on how you got there, examine what went well, and be honest about what didn’t go well.
